A new ingredient review process and approval pathway

In January 2025, the Association of American Feed Control Officials and Kansas State University's Olathe Innovation Campus began collaborating on a new ingredient submission pathway that provides fast, yet accurate scientific review for newly proposed ingredients in animal food.

Through this partnership, companies can submit ingredients they would like to include in food for companion and feed for food animals. The proposed ingredient will be scientifically reviewed in half the time that this evaluation process historically has taken. It is our hope that this accelerated approval process better supports industry timelines by allowing ingredients to be incorporated into the market in a time efficient manner, while maintaining rigorous safety evaluation through review by top scientific expertise.

All ingredient submissions are first submitted directly to AAFCO, where they will be processed into the appropriate submission review package. Once a level is identified, the SRIS team at K-State Olathe will begin to construct the subject matter expert (SME) panel for review, and if there is interest, a pre-consultation meeting can be scheduled.

About AAFCO
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has been guiding state, federal and international feed regulators with ingredient definitions, label standards and laboratory standards for more than 115 years, while supporting the health and safety of people and animals. Its members are charged by their state or federal laws to regulate the manufacture, sale and distribution of animal feeds and feed ingredients.

About K-State Olathe
Located in Greater Kansas City and the heart of the Animal Health Corridor, Kansas State University's Olathe Innovation Campus (K-State Olathe) is one of the university’s three campuses and has focus areas of animal health, food and nutrition, and advanced manufacturing. Its land-grant mission is to provide industry-driven academic programs and professional development offerings, and leverage applied research – all to improve wellbeing and drive economic growth.

K-State Olathe also offers the Animal Health Regulatory Affairs Graduate Certificate. This 15-credit hour certificate was developed with industry input and teaches graduates how to bring multimillion-dollar animal health products to the market while navigating federal agencies and compliance laws.

Steering committee

Representatives from state government and the animal food industry serve as a steering committee. This formal group provides strategic direction and guidance to AAFCO and K-State Olathe about the ingredient review process. Members also are charged with assisting the SRIS partnership on navigating actual and perceived conflicts of interest that may arise during the ingredient review process.
